Canon Point: Post-True End
Canon History: Wiki link!
Personality:

Sans is a lot of things. First and foremost, he's a laid-back, lazy dude who loves a good bad joke. This is the side of himself that most everyone will see because he's pretty secretive and private otherwise. So, outwardly, he's the loser brother that takes naps, shirks work, and jokes around constantly. He's always ready with a pun, always has a smile on his face, and never really seems all that affected by what's going on around him. A human in the underground? He just finds it kind of funny. He doesn't even do anything about them, despite getting human souls being the underground's collective mission. Why? Because he's 'not that interested in capturing humans.'

It's so easy to take how he presents himself as who Sans is, full stop, but that would be inaccurate. He might be friendly and agreeable under normal circumstances but get on his bad side and that stops being the case. On the start of a genocide path, Sans warns Frisk that they'll have a bad time if they keep on going how they are, and puts up a merciless (literally, at a certain point.) fight against Frisk should they kill everyone in the game. Even on a pacifist route, he'll tell Frisk that if he hadn't made a promise to protect them, they'd be dead where they stand. Yikes.

But that's the thing about Sans. He's got integrity, he keeps his promises until the absolute extreme forces him to go back on them. No matter how many people Frisk kills along the way, Sans doesn't fight them unless they've killed everyone in their path. And this says a lot, because Papyrus is one of the potential casualties, and Sans cares for and looks up to his brother a lot. His integrity only goes so far, though. He has no qualms cheating in his fight or slacking off at work. But when a promise to someone he cares about is involved, well...it's one of the few times he does honestly try. Not that he makes promises lightly. The one he makes to Toriel is a unique situation.

Sans might seem like a lazy slacker, but he's very smart and observant. It's implied he has some kind of scientific background due to the machine in his secret room and the way he talks about timelines. He's also able to pick up on odd details from a person's expression alone. When fighting Frisk, for example, he's able to guess the number of times he's killed them from their expression.

Speaking of, Sans is one of the few characters in the game that's aware of the many, many resets that happen throughout and before the game. It's not clear how much, if anything, he remembers from these different timelines, but they're definitely something that he's acutely aware of. It's something that really weighs on him, too. At one point, he did try to make things better. It's just that after a while, he lost hope and started thinking 'what's the point?' Sans gave up, in pretty much everything. Because why try when at any moment everything could be erased?

Abilities:

  • Teleportation: Sans calls them 'shortcuts,' but he's able to disappear and reappear where he wants to be.

  • B-B-Blue Magic: Sans is able to manipulate the gravity of an object, which means making it heavier or straight up tossing it around. He wouldn't be able to do this to big, heavy things like a tree, because it does take a lot of effort and power.

  • Bone attacks: He's able to summon and manipulate bones of all shapes and sizes, which he uses to hurl at enemies in waves and bunches.

  • Gaster Blasters: Sans is also able to summon these. They're like animal skull heads that shoot lasers.

  • Karmic Retribution: Sans is weak, in both his attacks and defense. The only reason he's so much of a threat is that 1) he can throw a lot of attacks in a short period of time, and 2) Karmic Retribution. This power lets him use the sins of his enemies against them. It can't deal the killing blow, but KR acts like a poison that slowly wears down his enemy when one of his attacks hit.

Inventory: The clothes on his back (hoodie, shorts, slippers, ect. Nothing fancy), a ketchup bottle, endless jokes
